With over 70 years of combined experience, our chimney sweep company proudly serves the homes and businesses of Essex and Middlesex Counties in Massachusetts. We understand the unique demands placed on chimneys in this historic and varied region, from the salty air along the coast to the changing temperatures inland. Our decades of collective expertise ensure that every sweep, inspection, and repair is executed with unparalleled skill and a deep understanding of local building codes and environmental factors, providing superior safety and efficiency for your fireplace and heating systems.
While you’ve likely never seen one, your chimney’s lining is vital for safety. It keeps flue gases contained and provides a clear passage for them to exit your home. Without a functional liner, your chimney’s walls are susceptible to damage caused by extreme temperatures and corrosive chemicals. A damaged (even absent) liner can then lead to cracks, holes and gaps forming in your chimney structure
At A-Z Chimney Sweeps, we know that chimneys may seem indestructible with little need for any upkeep. However, although they’re certainly built to last, chimneys are constantly exposed to all types of weather here in the Northeast – extreme heat to blizzard like snowstorms and plenty of cold.
When applied professionally and correctly to chimney masonry, there’s no more worry of water moving into existing cracks and starting a cycle of ongoing deterioration. In addition, you won’t have to worry about new small cracks that may appear opening up and letting water inside for problems down the road.
Although a "Chimney Inspection" can sound very straightforward and simplistic, a professionally trained chimney sweep will check all the parts, pieces, bits, and bobs of your system in search of anything that appears to be awry or damaged. We look for things like cracks, gaps, or separations among flue tiles (if your chimney is made of masonry and utilizes a clay liner), as well as any signs of leaks, outside debris, or substance buildup.
A functioning chimney crown, along with a chimney cap, will protect your entire system from a variety of issues by keeping everything that’s not supposed to be in your chimney, out of your chimney. That includes snow, rain, birds, small animals, bugs, leaves and debris. Because of its position, the chimney crown takes quite a bit of abuse from the elements, so regular inspections and repairs are needed.

A. At A-Z Chimney Sweeps, we adhere to the National Fire Protection Association’s recommendation that you have a chimney inspection once each year. Cleaning should be done as required after careful evaluation by a certified sweep. This inspection helps ensure adequate draft, a debris-free and crack-free structure, and tight mortar joints with no gaps.
A. While we always clean chimneys throughout the year, spring cleaning – right after the heating season is over – is best. Spring is also preferable because you won’t have to wait long for an appointment, and any repairs can be more conveniently completed throughout the spring and summer.
A. On most chimney appointments, they are cleaned from inside the house. This maximizes dust control and minimizes mess. The walls of the fireplace are hand-scrubbed using wire brushes. Special brushes attached to flexible poles are used to clean the chimney flue. The sweep controls the length of the pole by sliding it inside the flue as necessary. At A-Z Chimney, we are very meticulous in this process, and make sure our vacuums catch every possible piece of debris.
A. Our goal on every job is to leave your home exactly as we found it. Cleaning the chimney from inside your home controls any dispersion of dust (as previously stated). We lay out clean drop cloths in front of your fireplace, and our equipment never touches your floors. Our special vacuums collect all debris as we brush the chimney, so loose soot is immediately trapped.
When designed to code, properly fitted and sized, a chimney cap substantially helps protect your home, preventing undesirable exterior elements from entering, such as rain, snow, birds and ensuring other animals and debris cannot get through it either. Professionally installed by A-Z Chimney Sweeps, your chimney cap may improve venting and can help eliminate some unwanted downdrafts.
Firstly, you want to always make sure the damper to be in the fully open position before you light your fire, for safety reasons. If you wait until you’ve lit a fire in your fireplace to check that the damper is open, it’ll be much more difficult to safely open the damper. So, always look up into your fireplace with a flashlight to check that the damper is open first. Once you’ve confirmed it’s open, then you can light your fire. For any additional questions, please reach out to us!
Absolutely! Although gas is generally a clean-burning fuel, the chimney can become non-functional from bird nests or other debris blocking the flue. Modern furnaces can also have many problems when they’re vented through average flues intended for older furnaces. So, it’s extremely important that you schedule annual inspections for all your chimneys – gas furnaces included.
The truth is, these products are often promoted for their ability to remove a portion of the creosote from a masonry or metal chimney interior through catalytic action when burned in a fireplace or wood stove. But the use of these products alone is simply not an adequate substitute for mechanical chimney cleaning and inspection, nor does it provide the same level of protection to the chimney system. So while these products may provide some assistance in the reduction, it is certainly not a replacement.
Creosote is a flammable deposit that’s a natural byproduct of wood-burning and oil-burning. Level 3 creosote is the glazed type that can’t be removed with mechanical sweeping alone.
The average cost of an annual chimney cleaning is $200 to $350. Some companies are more expensive than others, but the prices vary primarily due to the type of system being serviced. For example, if your system is showing signs of malfunction or damage, we may suggest that you get it fixed or replaced. To always promote transparency during inspections, our technicians take photos and videos to ensure you understand what’s going on within your flue where the bulk of issues are hidden from the view of hearth and home owners.
